Proximity-induced zero-energy states indistinguishable from topological edge states

چکیده

When normal metals (NMs) are attached to topological insulators or superconductors, it is conceivable that the quantum states in these finite adjacent materials can intermix. In this case---and because NM usually does not possess same symmetry as material---it pertinent ask whether zero-energy edge layer affected by presence of NM. To address issue, we consider three prototype systems simulated tight-binding models, namely a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger/NM, Kitaev/NM, and Chern insulator/NM. For all junctions investigated, find there exist trivial ``fine-tuned'' percolate into region, thus mimicking state. These created fine-tuning chemical potential such some cross zero energy; they occur even when material topologically phase, over large region phase diagram. Interestingly, true Majorana end modes Kitaev/NM model cannot be crossed any state, metal case break particle-hole symmetry. On other hand, chiral Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain broken NM, crossings allowed. addition, do preserve nonspatial symmetries, but state self-generates eigenvalue, fine-tuned still occur. Our results indicate metallic layer, one has cautious identify merely from their energy spectra wave function profiles near interface.

Topological origin of zero-energy edge states in particle-hole symmetric systems.

A criterion to determine the existence of zero-energy edge states is discussed for a class of particle-hole symmetric Hamiltonians. A "loop" in a parameter space is assigned for each one-dimensional bulk Hamiltonian, and its topological properties, combined with the chiral symmetry, play an essential role. It provides a unified framework to discuss zero-energy edge modes for several systems suc...

Imaging topological edge states in silicon photonics

Topological features—global properties not discernible locally—emerge in systems ranging from liquid crystals to magnets to fractional quantum Hall systems. A deeper understanding of the role of topology in physics has led to a new class of matter—topologically ordered systems. The best known examples are quantum Hall effects, where insensitivity to local properties manifests itself as conducta...

AdS/CFT Duals of Topological Black Holes and the Entropy of Zero–Energy States

The horizon of a static black hole in Anti-deSitter space can be spherical, planar, or hyperbolic. The microscopic dynamics of the first two classes of black holes have been extensively discussed recently within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that hyperbolic black holes introduce new and fruitful features in this respect, allowing for more detailed comparisons between the w...

Indistinguishable states I. Perfect model scenario

An accurate forecast of a nonlinear system will require an accurate estimation of the initial state. It is shown that even under the ideal conditions of a perfect model and infinite past observations of a deterministic nonlinear system, uncertainty in the observations makes exact state estimation is impossible. Consistent with the noisy observations there is a set of states indistinguishable fr...

Shot Noise Induced Charge and Potential Fluctuations of Edge States in Proximity of a Gate

We evaluate the RC-time of edge states capacitively coupled to a gate located away from a QPC which allows for partial transmission of an edge channel. At long times or low frequencies the RC-time governs the relaxation of charge and current and governs the fluctuations of the equilibrium electrostatic potential. The RC-time in mesoscopic structures is determined by an electrochemical capacitan...
